My Diamond Fretsaw is quite an old one. It does not have the balancing mechanism that the newer ones have and so it bounces around a lot, even at moderate speeds. I plan to have the balancing mechanism fitted. Has anyone else had this done ? Was it successful ?

Hi Tom. yes it can be done, normally with no problems! However one of the most usual causes of the saw bouncing around is a flexible workbench. Best option is to contact Doug at Diamond Fretsaws and see what he reccommends, I am sure if it can be returned to the UK this modification will be easily possible. The telephone number is on the main page. Good luck and let us know how you get on.

If it's 'bouncing around', have you even got it bolted down Tom ?

Yes it is bolted down to a sturdy bench. It is the mechanism of the saw that is at fault. Apparently, saws made before 1995 do not have balance weights built in, but they can be added. Doug sells them as a kit but I think I will ask him to do it so that he can do a overhaul at the same time.

Hi Tom, yes that is correct. However even the earliest models did not particularly "bounce" around as I remember, the balance mechanism was an inmprovement certainly, but I wonder if that is all there is to it, perhaps the re-furb may discover something else as well? I have just spoken to Doug and the kit is available, with full fitting instructions. They are not hard to fit, certainly not during the production stage. It is Diamonds intension that no saw will ever be beyond updating and modifications as is possible.
However as you obviously do know about the kit, it should be straight forward enough. Good luck, let us know how you get on.

I'm just considering buying a Diamond, Can someone advise how to identify a machine's year of manufacture (might I assume all machines after '95 had the balance weights you talk about ?) ?

Although perhaps better as a new subject, would you also advise what to look for when buying a used machine ??

Many Thanks, Pete - Suffolk

When I first bought my Diamond I found it vibrated very badly, I phoned the makers J D Woodward and they advised me to remove the balance weight and make sure the machine was bolted down firmly, since then the machine has been fine.
